Speaker Profile

SESSION DESCRIPTION
Nearly one year ago, Australia became the first country in the world to implement highly controversial national legislation that attempted to reduce children’s exposure to social media. This presentation will describe the background to the Australian legislation, outline the approach that the government is taking to its evaluation, and share the latest data about what the legislation has – and has not – achieved. In doing so, the overarching objective of this presentation is to encourage reflection on how health professionals, parents, communities and governments best respond to the rapidly changing digital and commercial determinants of child and adolescent health.

EDUCATION GOALS

  • Understand the context of social media as a commercial determinant of child and adolescent health.
  • Consider the range of available policy responses to counter the commercial determinants of Health.
  • Reflect on your personal beliefs and biases in relation to public policy around children’s exposure to social media.
