Pediatric Grand Rounds (CME): Strategic Science to Promote Healthy Eating Policies

January 20, 2026

Strategic Science to Promote Healthy Eating Policies

SPEAKER
Anna Grummon, PhD
Assistant Professor , General Pediatrics, and, by courtesy, of Health Policy, Stanford School of Medicine

SESSION DESCRIPTION
This session will explore how food labeling policies shape what foods families buy, what companies sell, and ultimately how healthy we are. Dr. Anna Grummon will present new evidence from large randomized trials and real-world policy evaluations of new food labeling policies, highlighting which policies improve consumer understanding, encourage healthier purchases, and avoid widening disparities. Framed through a “strategic science” approach, the talk will show how research can be used to inform policy and strengthen efforts to improve diet and long-term health for children and their families.

EDUCATION GOALS

  • Describe the current U.S. landscape of food and calorie labeling policies, including the FDA’s proposed front-of-package “Nutrition Info” label and existing calorie labeling requirements.
  • Evaluate evidence from randomized trials and natural experiments on how different label designs affect consumer understanding, purchasing behavior, health equity, and product reformulation.
  • Apply principles of strategic science to identify ways pediatric clinicians, researchers, and advocates can help translate research into effective public policy.
