CBD 2024: The Power of Fierce and Tender Self-Compassion with Kristin Neff, PhD
Self-compassion has two main forms – tender and fierce. Tender self-compassion allows us to accept our flawed selves and our imperfect lives with kindness rather than harsh judgment. Fierce self-compassion spurs us to alleviate suffering by standing up to injustice or making needed changes to improve our lives. When fierce and tender compassion are combined and integrated, it creates a type of caring force that is extremely powerful in terms of mental and physical well-being, improved relationships, reduced burnout, and commitment to social justice.
Kristin Neff, PhD, is an Associate Professor of Educational Psychology at the University of Texas at Austin. She is a pioneer in the field of self-compassion research, conducting the first empirical studies on self-compassion more than twenty years ago. She has been recognized as one of the most influential researchers in psychology worldwide. She runs the Self-Compassion Community, an online learning platform where people can learn the skill of self-compassion with the help of others. She is the author of the bestselling books Self-Compassion and Fierce Self-Compassion: How Women Can Harness Kindness to Speak Up, Claim Their Power, and Thrive. Along with her colleague Chris Germer, she developed the empirically-supported Mindful Self-Compassion program and co-founded the Center for Mindful Self-Compassion. They co-wrote the best-selling The Mindful Self-Compassion Workbook and have a new book called Mindful Self-Compassion for Burnout coming out in Fall 2024.
