Better Than They Found It: Coaches Who Re-Wrote The Playbook | Clips & Conversation | Film Sneak Peek & Panel Discussion

May 03, 2026

We’ve all had a coach, mentor, or teacher who changed the game of life for us — whether in a sports setting, workplace, or classroom.

To honor the spirit and legacy of athletes and coaches who shape Stanford sports and the world, Stanford University’s Sports Equity Lab in partnership with Stanford Arts and Residential & Dining Enterprises (R&DE) Student Housing Operations & Stanford Conferences, will host a documentary sneak peek of Better Than They Found It: Coaches Who Re-Wrote the Playbook.

This performance-data-driven experience pairs powerful storytelling with a dynamic panel of distinguished speakers. Preview clips of the film, directed by Stanford alumna Tarana Harris Mayes, daughter of NFL coach Chick Harris, will be showcased, accompanied by an in-person panel discussion with Mayes, moderated by Super Bowl LIX Champion Thomas Booker (Class of ‘22), and featuring:

  • ?Tavita Pritchard, Stanford Director of Football
  • Willie Shaw, former Stanford Football and NFL coach
  • Tyrone Willingham, former Stanford Football and NFL coach
  • Pam Baker, CEO of Women’s Coaching Alliance

These leaders will offer perspectives on empathic guidance, current industry topics, and inspiration for all student-athletes, creatives, and the local community — while delving into themes explored in the forthcoming film featuring NFL legends Tony Dungy, Herman Edwards, Bruce Arians and Stanford football greats Willie and David Shaw, among many more.

Join us for a lively convening that will celebrate uplifting filmmaking, supportive leadership, and personal-development insights for winning in any area of life today and into the future!
