Enhancing Empathy through Mindful Communication – Developing Skills to Listen Deeply, Discern Words Wisely, and Speak Compass
In this 5-session online engagement class, you will develop your ability to express empathy toward yourself and others through skills rooted in contemplative practices. Drawing upon Oren Jay Sofer’s book Say What You Mean, this class will strengthen your ability to offer empathic presence, decrease bias and other limiting habitual responses, and effectively honor the needs of yourself and others with kindness and compassion.
Guided contemplative practices will commence each class and conversation inspired by the reading will be the core of this interactive, experiential, and dynamic class. During class, we will pair up into practice partners to engage in the skills highlighted each week.
Participants will be asked to read Sofer’s book each week (about 40 pages per week) in order to develop skills and a realistic action plan for communication. Prior to the first class, please purchase Say What You Mean and read both the introduction and part 1.
Instructor: Tia Rich, PhD, is the founder and director of Contemplation by Design. She has been integrating contemplative practice into resilience, stress management, and career training programs and academic classes at Stanford University and Medical Center since 1984.
