Compassion as Emotional Weightlifting – How and When to Put the Bar Down

February 01, 2022 | 2:00pm - 3:15pm

It is natural to want to help someone who is suffering, but sometimes we may struggle as we try to support others through difficulties, grief, and trauma. This can be especially true for caregivers. How can we be there for others without internalizing their suffering and allowing it to harm us?

Please join us in this online session to share strategies for proper and sustainable emotional 'heavy-lifting as well as when and how to take breaks and shift our attention to ourselves or others we care for. We will explore a deeper understanding of the difference between empathy and compassion and why 'compassion fatigue may not be a thing at all.

Instructor: Donnovan Somera Yisrael, MA, is a senior health educator with Well-Being at Stanford and brings a positive psychology perspective to all of his teaching. He is also a grief educator and volunteer with Kara in Palo Alto.
